About Me

Hello! My name is Kaitlin Morgan and I'm a social science teacher at Minarets High School, a project-based school that is 1:1 with Macbook Airs. At Minarets, I teach Minarets C's, a course designed to help prepare incoming freshmen for high school and Digital Journalism. I'm also the adviser for both CSF chapter on campus as well as the WASC coordinator. 

Throughout my eight years of teaching, I've inevitably encountered failure. As a teacher, these failures are evidence that I am learning and evolving my craft, but as a recovering perfectionist these mistakes are embarrassing, unacceptable, and something I wish to avoid at all costs. Because of the disconnect between what I tell my students about failures and my personal beliefs, I decided to start this blog to force me to confront my failures head on. Maybe if I reflect on these failures, I will see why these are something to be celebrated and not avoided.

Its official: I'm a Google Certified Innovator! And the experience was even more amazing and life-changing than I ever imagined. WWI Trenches in the Classroom

By far one of my favorite historical simulations to do is the trench warfare simulation for WWI. Initially, the thought of allowing students to turn the classroom into a war zone made me hesitant to do the simulation, but I finally took a deep breath in 2014 and decided to try it out.* I began the class period with the following presentation to have some order to the madness. From my first experiences, I highly recommend that you go over the rules and expectations BEFORE the trench construction begins. With all of the student excitement and noise, it is difficult to get their attention, especially if they begin hiding in the trenches; I would divide up the classroom and allow construction and then it was herding cats to get everyone to refocus for more direction. The main rules I have is that when the lights are on nothing is thrown, but when the lights go off and the war begins then its fair game. From Quick Writes to Blog Posts

Routine is everything in the classroom. It gives structure to students who may not have much of a structure at home and alleviates anxiety since students know what to expect. Sample Quick Write from 2013 When I first started teaching, I would welcome everyone to the classroom, go over announcements, and then we would complete the Quick Write for the day. I created a nifty little template for students to complete and submit at the end of each week. Typically it would be a prompt that would either review the previous day's lesson or introduce the day's lesson. The Pros: It was a great routine for the students that allowed them reflect, discuss, and engage for the period.  The Cons: The audience consisted of me and maybe a TA so grammar, proof-reading, and full explanations were not a priority for students.
